Polish folk Catholicism

If you want to know if a building was built before the Second World War, all you have to do is look for shrines- that's right, shrines! During the war, the people of Warsaw started building shrines, mostly in courtyards, where they went to pray. I had heard that they could still be found to this day, and so I went on a little walk in the Praga district of Warsaw to see if I could really find them (the Praga district, unlike other parts of Warsaw, escaped war demolition, post-war reconstruction and recent gentrification). As you can see by the pictures posted above, the shrines are really there, mostly hidden in the courtyards of buildings, although some, like the third picture of the set, was built on a street corner. They are still to this day used as places of prayer, and most of them are adorned with fresh flowers and candles.
